Exploring History and Building Bonds: Class 8 Girls' OBL 2024 Trip to Pune and Aurangabad

Just before dawn on the morning of October 1st, we embarked on our journey to Pune and Aurangabad for our Outbound Learning. There were numerous things to look forward to on this trip. Visiting these towns, we had the opportunity to dive into the history of India firsthand. Pune and Aurangabad are sites of tremendous archaeological wealth. Learning about history from books is one thing, but seeing the places and observing the nuances of structural designs and intricate carvings is another. We learned far more from walking through the caves, forts, and palaces than we could from the endless paragraphs in our history textbooks. This trip was the epitome of practical learning and experience.

Our first destination was the Ajanta Caves. These 30 Buddhist rock-cut caves were built between the 2nd century BCE and the 5th century CE. Created by the Hinayana and Mahayana sects of Buddhism, they depict the life of Lord Buddha and his teachings, as well as showcase amazing carving and painting techniques that were far ahead of their time. The true marvel, however, was that the entire cave complex was carved from a single rock.

On the second day, we visited Bibi ka Maqbara, Daulatabad Fort, and the Ellora Caves. Bibi ka Maqbara, also known as the ‘mini Taj Mahal,’ was built as a tomb for Aurangzeb’s wife. Our next stop was Daulatabad Fort, which had long been under the Yadavas' control. Nestled within the fort was the Chand Minar, a tall tower crowned with a crescent. After this, we visited the Ellora Caves, which were breathtaking. Built between the 5th and 11th centuries, they too were carved from a single rock.

As we drove into Pune, we visited the Raja Dinkar Museum the next day. The artifacts in the museum showcased the excellent craftsmanship, creativity, and innovation of our ancestors. Our visit to Lal Mahal reminded us of the glorious past of the Maratha kingdom. Lal Mahal is where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj spent his childhood, and it highlighted the importance of Jija Bai, his mother, in his upbringing. We also visited the Aga Khan Palace, made famous as the place where Mahatma Gandhi and his close associates were imprisoned from August 10th, 1942, to May 6th, 1944. It offered a deep dive into the great history of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation.

On the last day of our trip, we visited the Phoenix Mall in Pune, followed by a DJ party, which made this OBL truly memorable. This OBL journey was a great learning experience for each one of us. Not only did we learn about the rich history of our country, but we also grew closer as a batch. This journey brought us together and taught us the value of friendship and unity. Staying on our own in rooms, waking up early for each day’s journey, and taking care of ourselves taught us the importance of discipline and responsibility. This expedition offered practical learning and instilled many life skills and values in us. It is an OBL we will never forget.
